Matt Whitcomb grew up in the town of Worthington, MA skiing with his family, and he became the head coach of the U.S. women’s Nordic ski team in 2012. Matt has been an essential member of the U.S. Ski Team coaching staff, guiding it through some of its most prosperous years. He started training with the U.S. Ski Team in 2006 and has guided them through four Olympic games. Two American women won a historic gold medal in women’s cross-country skiing at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics Winter Olympics, under his leadership and coaching-Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall won gold. The US Cross-Country team had not taken home an Olympic medal since 1976.
At the Olympics in Beijing in 2022, under Matt’s leadership Jessie Diggins won two more medals for the team—a bronze and a silver. Coaching cross-country ski racers is about optimizing fitness, but Matt believes that his team's focus on positive group dynamics is the secret to its success.
Matt continues his success as head coach between Olympics. He has lead the U.S. XC Ski Team to win four medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships from 2013 to 2017. In 2023, Under Matt’s leadership, Jessie Diggings made history by becoming the first American to take home a gold in an individual competition. Diggins became the first American to win the top spot in the women's overall rankings for the 2020–21 FIS Cross–Country World Cup. Matt also serves on the board of directors of the National Nordic Foundation and is passionate about assist athletes transitioning from the amateur to the professional ranks.
